WHAT HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED:

JMEC was part of the EQE design team for the seismic vulnerability study of the Carquinez Bridge with main span of 1,100'.  The West Span was of riveted steel construction, and the East Span was of  welded steel construction.

JMEC was responsible for the review of seismic analysis results, and the preliminary retrofit design for the East Span.  Preliminary retrofit measures and details were developed for the following:
  • Selective superstructure member strengthening by replacing bolts and adding cover plates
  • Strengthening of floor beam to truss connections
  • Strengthening of steel towers
  • Retrofit tower base connections
  • Strengthening of shear locks at expansion joints
  • Strengthening of suspended spans
  • Construct catch blocks and shear keys at abutment
  • Mobilize bridge deck by making bridge deck composite
  • Provide gaps at Expansion Joints
Project Role:  Subconsultant for Bridge Design

Clients:  California Department of Transportation
               EQE International

Special Issues:  The west span (SB) was later replaced by a new suspension bridge and the east span (NB) was retrofitted.

Schedule:  Evaluation was completed in 1993
